Beer & Cheese the Swarthmore Co-op Way

Beer & Cheese never tasted so good or were enjoyed in such pleasant company.

The Swarthmore Co-op’s Beer and Cheese Tasting event last night was an absolute hit!  The Co-op was packed to the brim with 55 community members who sought to enjoy the exquisite local cheeses and beers that were offered.

Led by local beer expert and professor at Swarthmore College, Hansjakob Werlen, attendees received generous portions of Calkins Cheeses such as Noble Road, Cowtipper, Daisy, and others.  Complemented by brews from Dock Street Brewery, Yards Brewing Co., and Victory Brewing Co., a beer and cheese enthusiast couldn’t ask for more.

A special thanks goes out to Calkin’s Creamery, Yards, Dock Street Brewery, and Victory Brewing Company for their contributions.

View our post-event YouTube video and our Flickr channel for some great event photos.

This was truly beer & cheese done right and we look forward to doing it again soon!  To see more upcoming Co-op events visit our Events Page.

You’re Invited to Hear Dr. Colin Campbell

This Saturday, we’re showing the movie, Forks Over Knives, free of charge.  To find more information about this event click here.

As an added bonus, however, we’ve been invited to attend a guest lecture at the University of Pennsylvania to hear Dr. Colin Campbell, an instrumental powering force behind the movie Forks Over Knives, speak about the growing plant-based health revolution.

Dr. Campbell is Cornell University’s Jacob Gould Schurman Professor Emeritus of Nutritional Biochemistry. He is the world’s foremost authority on nutrition’s role in the reversal of cancer, diabetes and other chronic diseases.

Dr. Campbell’s information is relevant for health care providers, practitioners, researchers, faculty, trustees and administrators with an interest in the use of dietary intervention for the reversal of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, certain cancers and other chronic conditions.  His message is also pertinent for those desiring to restore their own medically ideal health and weight.

There is a $10 fee for general members of the public who attend Dr. Campbell’s lecture and all proceeds from the sale of seats will benefit two non-profit organizations: BeatCancer.org in Wynnewood, PA and The American College of Lifestyle Medicine Foundation in Woodburn, OR.

Date Night Winner

One week ago we announced a “Date Night” contest calling for art as an entry to win a free dinner-for-two with chef and Co-op GM, Marc BrownGold, in the comfort of your own home. When we announced this contest we didn’t quite know what to expect in terms of entries and participation…

Today, one week later and the close of the contest, we received tremendous participation through many quality submissions of art.  We were truly touched and deeply moved by the paintings, drawings, poems, pictures, and music that were submitted.

Further, each submission was personal – recounting a treasured time, memory, image, or feeling that was made into art.

Feeling overwhelmed by the pure beauty, honesty, and love each piece of art inspired, we knew we didn’t have a chance of adequately or accurately picking just one ‘best’ piece.

So, though a difficult decision, we decided to put each submission into a random drawing where everyone had a fair chance of winning the “Date Night” dinner.  We appreciated each and every entry and just couldn’t merit only one ‘best’ submission.

With that said, a ‘winner’ was chosen randomly out of a hat today by Co-op GM, Marc BrownGold, and that person is…(drum roll please)… Ed K…    Congratulations to Ed!

While Ed has already been contacted for his free “Date Night”, we thank everyone who submitted an entry.  They were inspiring and beautiful pieces that we were honored to have experienced.

Lastly, we have many personal pieces; some submissions may be the only copy in existence…for those who desire to receive their submission back, please email graphics@swarthmore.coop & marketing@swarthmore.coop, call 610-543-9301, or just stop in and ask for your piece – we’re happy to oblige.

Thanks again to all, and we look forward to running another contest like this in the future.

p.s. – Look for our video when we visit Ed’s home to cook his Date Night meal.

Forks Over Knives – Movie Night at the Co-op

When we show a movie at the Co-op, we show a movie that’s meaningful, has impact, and one that’ll make you think.  This month we’ll be showing Forks Over Knives, a movie that tackles the daunting issue of diet and disease in America.  Trust us, this movie will undoubtedly leave a long-term impression.

On Saturday, February 18 at 8pm mark your calendars for this free movie at the Co-op, bring your appetite for some gourmet popcorn on the house, and get ready for a movie that may change the way you think, eat, and live.

Think we’re joking?  Just take a look at this two-minute trailer, which might be just enough time to give you some goosebumps:

As a summary, Forks Over Knives examines the profound claim that most, if not all, of the degenerative diseases that afflict us can be controlled, or even reversed, by rejecting animal-based and processed foods.

The movie shows that degenerative diseases like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and even several forms of cancer, could almost always be prevented – and in many cases reversed – by adopting a whole-food, plant-based diet.

The idea of food as medicine is also put to the test. Throughout the film, cameras follow “reality patients” who have chronic conditions from heart disease to diabetes. Doctors teach these patients how to adopt a whole-food, plant-based diet as the primary approach to treat their ailments – while the challenges and triumphs of their journeys are revealed.

Here’s what some have said about Forks Over Knives:

Roger Ebert, Film Critic: “Here is a film that can save your life…I am convinced this message is true.”

Tony Gonzales, Football Player: “Forks Over Knives is a must-see film that shows convincingly how plant foods can be at the center of a health revolution.”

Oprah Winfrey, Talk Show Host: “Forks Over Knives is a provocative documentary that explores the idea of using food as medicine.”

We look forward to seeing you at the Co-op on Saturday, February 18 at 8pm.

Free Date Night Dinner – Enter Through Art

It’s not too often that you receive a free dinner in the comfort of your own home with an expert chef cooking you an exquisite meal from scratch.  Well, that’s just what this is:

The Swarthmore Co-op is hosting a contest to win a free “Date Night Dinner” where expert chef and Co-op General Manager, Marc BrownGold, comes to the winner’s house and cooks a fabulous dinner for two in the comfort of their own home.  Using local and sustainable produce, meats and flavorings from the Co-op, you’re guaranteed one of the most natural and delicious meals of your life.

But, the contest entry is no easy pass! Do you think we just auction off Marc’s talent for free?  No way…

In order to enter, you need to submit a piece of art.  That’s right, we want art as your entry fee.  It can be a short poem, haiku, drawing, small painting, photo…anything that’s artistic.   So, harness your inner Dickinson, Whitman, Monet, Picasso,… and submit your entry to the cashiers at the Co-op checkout counter.

The contest begins Friday, February 3 and ends Thursday, February 9.   The winner will be judged on artistic creativity and be decided by vote from five Swarthmore Co-op managers.  The winner be contacted on Friday, February 10, and will be offered their Date Night Dinner that Saturday or Sunday, February 11th or 12th…a dinner that’s just in time Valentine’s Day.

So have fun, be creative, and enjoy.
