Sunday Suppers May 2012

The Co-op sponsors an outreach initiative called “Sunday Suppers”.  On Sunday nights, after the Co-op closes its doors to shoppers, volunteers from the community cook healthy, nutritious, and homemade meals in the Co-op kitchen — about 3-5 meals per person — and deliver them on Monday morning to local elderly and low income residents in need.

Last spring, the Co-op’s Education Committee piloted Sunday Suppers, with 8 adult volunteers cooking and delivering 4-5 meals to 10 low-income or homebound seniors in Swarthmore and surrounding communities.  We received great feedback from food recipients – who benefited from delicious, nutrient-rich, homemade meals that supported health – and volunteers, who cultivated a sense of service through cooking together for others in need.

The Co-op’s successful fundraiser dinner in August 2011 raised over $3500 for this effort. Over three-quarters of Swarthmore businesses supported the program, along with more than 150 residents.

Our most recent menu:

  • Corn & Leek Chowder
  • Baked Salmon with Mushrooms, Rosemary & Lemon
  • Wheat Berry Salad with Tomato, Cucumber, Feta & Mint
  • Asparagus with Almonds
  • Fresh Strawberries
  • Whole Wheat Roll with Pastured Butter

Greener Partners Benefit Event

Greener Partners Tapas Benefit

At Greener Partners and the Swarthmore Co-op, we believe local food is the best kind — where those who eat it feel connection to the soil it’s grown in and the people who cultivate it. In imagining a better food system, Greener Partners operates community Farm Hubs as resources for local produce and for education — as well as inspiration — about food and farming. Our farmers grow vegetables, herbs and fruit for our own Farm Market, Community Supported Agriculture members and to sell at area farmers’ markets. Our education programs engage kids, both on our farms and in area schools, through programs like Seed to Snack®, The SOL Food Project and Greener Partners Farm Camps. To cross generations, we offer workshops for adults and families on the “lost arts” of our agricultural and cultural past that still are relevant and useful in our lives today.

With a diverse range of projects throughout the Philadelphia region, we seek to make local food accessible by offering multiple ways of experiencing fresh, local food in our communities. Through our First Generation Farmer Program we are training the next generation of farmers to possess diverse skills for cultivating a better food system.

Delaware County Enviro Fair 2012

Join Co-op Board Member and Swarthmore Co-op Education Committee Member, Helen Nadel at the Delaware County Enviro Fair 2012.

“Cooking in the Sustainable Kitchen”

Helen Nadel will explore sustainable food choices and their impact on the environment, human health (both consumer and farmworker), and animal welfare, but won’t stop there.  Because it’s not just what we buy but how we use it that helps sustain the planet.  So we will connect to the joy of cooking and eating well, and figure out how – in the rush of our weekly lives – we can make kitchen activities a sustainable part our our lives.  Everyone will take away recipes and tips for menu planning.

This year’s EnviroFair will be bigger than ever! The themes will be A Taste of the Earth (from farm to table, eating in or dining out) and Electric & Hybrid Vehicle Expo (from alternative vehicles to alternative transportation systems. Sponsored by the Earth Care Council, it will feature dozens of vendors, agencies, and non-profit groups (including TTM & TBM!) who will be exhibiting their information and products. Don’t miss it!
