MARC and ANTHONY take SEATTLE

November 14, 2012 by Anthony

On October 24-28th, General Manager, Marc BrownGold, and Marketing Director, Anthony Saufley took a trip to Seattle for a seminar by a World Famous Pike Place Fish Market consultant.  The following is an account of that harrowing, adventure filled and legendary journey. Day 1-Smooth Sailing MARC – I packed my bag this morning and was excited to get underway. Seattle here we come. The one thing that we did do was overestimate our wait at the airport. It was empty […]

Discovering New Products for the Co-op

August 23, 2012 by Anthony

Back in May, Marc (Co-op GM) and Marci (Grocery Manager) went to Orlando, to a food show for Haddon House, then in June, Jess (Bread & Cheese Manager), Marc, Anthony (Marketing Director), John (Assistant Grocery Manager) and Marci went to Washington, DC for the Fancy Food Show.  At food shows, there are multitudes of vendors and producers vying for the attention of store managers, owners and distributors. To state that it can be information overload is to do it an […]

Organic Food Regulations

June 26, 2012 by Anthony

Certified Organic In just a few years, the term “organic” has changed meaning. Before the “USDA organic” label existed, the term implied sustainability. Being sustainable means choosing methods that are naturally well-suited for the local area and not negatively impacting the land. Unfortunately, the “USDA organic” label only addresses the production-side of farming. They don’t check farms’ long-term effect on the environment. The USDA certification has helped bring organics to the mainstream, yet many believe it has weakened the true […]

Sunday Suppers May 2012

May 9, 2012 by Anthony

The Co-op sponsors an outreach initiative called “Sunday Suppers”.  On Sunday nights, after the Co-op closes its doors to shoppers, volunteers from the community cook healthy, nutritious, and homemade meals in the Co-op kitchen — about 3-5 meals per person — and deliver them on Monday morning to local elderly and low income residents in need. Last spring, the Co-op’s Education Committee piloted Sunday Suppers, with 8 adult volunteers cooking and delivering 4-5 meals to 10 low-income or homebound seniors […]

Greener Partners Benefit Event

April 11, 2012 by Anthony

Greener Partners Tapas Benefit At Greener Partners and the Swarthmore Co-op, we believe local food is the best kind — where those who eat it feel connection to the soil it’s grown in and the people who cultivate it. In imagining a better food system, Greener Partners operates community Farm Hubs as resources for local produce and for education — as well as inspiration — about food and farming. Our farmers grow vegetables, herbs and fruit for our own Farm […]

April 7, 2012 by Anthony

Join Co-op Board Member and Swarthmore Co-op Education Committee Member, Helen Nadel at the Delaware County Enviro Fair 2012. “Cooking in the Sustainable Kitchen” Helen Nadel will explore sustainable food choices and their impact on the environment, human health (both consumer and farmworker), and animal welfare, but won’t stop there.  Because it’s not just what we buy but how we use it that helps sustain the planet.  So we will connect to the joy of cooking and eating well, and […]

The Co-op goes BYOB!

March 20, 2012 by coopoperations

In January the Co-op rolled out their Nine Ideas Program.  Each Month Marc will be selecting the best idea proposed by a Co-op employee that supports one of the following nine ideas: Be Distinctive – How can we set ourselves apart from the other grocery stores in this area? Update the Store – Which areas can we expand or revamp to make better? Capitalize on Publicity – What/How can we highlight to draw our customer’s focus to that area? Create Personalized Relationships with […]

Eaters, beware: Walmart is taking over our food system

January 5, 2012 by Anthony

WRITTEN AND SOURCED BY:  Stacy Mitchell blogger for http://www.grist.org Aubretia Edick has worked at a Walmart store in upstate New York for 11 years, but she won’t buy fresh food there. Bagged salads, she claims, are often past their sell-by dates and, in the summer, fruit is sometimes kept on shelves until it rots. “They say, ‘We’ll take care of it,’ but they don’t. As a cashier, you hear a lot of people complain,” she said. Edick blames the problems […]
