Philabundance serves Philadelphia, Montgomery, Delaware, Chester and Bucks County, in addition to the four neighboring New Jersey areas of: Salem, Camden, Gloucester and West Burlington.
Food poverty—the lack of access to nutritious, affordable food—is present in every community. From children and seniors to the increasing number of working poor, hunger affects close to a million individuals throughout the Delaware Valley. Philabundance provides food to approximately 65,000 people per week through their direct services and network of 500 member agencies including emergency food kitchens, food cupboards, senior centers, and more.
Most households rely on shelf-stable products in some way, but for those living in food insecurity and without regular access to affordable, nutritious fresh food—the pantry is a lifeline to their next meal. Hosting a food drive not only provides Philabundance with a critical supply of food, but also fosters a stronger sense of community and social responsibility.
The Co-op employees have taken a strong interest in volunteering their time at Philabundance’s main warehouse location in Philadelphia and have now joined their efforts in hopes of an annual Thanksgiving food drive.
The Co-op will hold the food drive from now through Thursday November 17th. There are large drop boxes inside the Co-op at either entrance.
Some suggested food items are:
canned/shelf stable tuna, canned beef stew, canned chili, canned pasta, 100% fruit juices (plastic bottles only), creamy peanut butter and jelly (plastic containers only), boxed macaroni and cheese, canned pork and beans, baked beans, canned green beans, canned corn, breakfast cereal or hot cereal and canned fruit cocktail.
Lets make our first annual Thanksgiving food drive a success! Our goal is 300 lbs. of donated food!
We are also accepting monetary donations, only in the form of checks, made out to Philadundance. We will be dropping all checks off at the same time as the food donations. If writing a check please write Swarthmore Co-op Food Drive in the memo section.
Any questions? Ask a cashier or a manager. We will be posting what our final donation weight is after the drive, stay tuned!
