On October 13, 2012, the Swarthmore Co-op, it’s members, and the community celebrated our 75th Anniversary. We’ve hit a few bumps along the way, but we are all proud to say that our doors have been open for 75 years.
Before we get to the celebration, a brief history on the Co-op…
In 1937, the Co-op was officially founded as the Consumers’ Cooperative Association of Swarthmore Inc., the third oldest Co-op in the nation (membership was ONLY $5!)
By 1987, it was apparent to our general manager, the board, and the community that the Co-op needed renovations and more space.
In December of 2002, the board voted to raise the membership fee to $300 with the intent of revitalizing our cooperative values and having the shoppers view it as a long-term investment in the community. As a result, the Co-op had a new total of 720 members and 75 member loans.
On October 12, 2004, the old store closed its doors for good. Two days later, the new store opened at 341 Dartmouth Avenue.
Since 2002, our membership has grown to almost 1,200 members. Product selection has greatly expanded, with much more organic and locally sourced produce, sustainable meat and fish, prepared foods, gluten-free selections, and bulk options.
Thank to all of our members, the board, and the community for all your support. Without you, the Co-op wouldn’t be where it is today.
And now… THE CELEBRATION!
